Too Drunk To Dream

…ain’t no drinking when the bottle’s dry…

Portland, Maine’s Fire On Fire setting my ears ablaze

I’ve been listening to an intriguing album from Fire On Fire of South Portland, Maine (one of my favorite little cities). It’s at once eerie and timeless, morphing between The Felice Brothers’ rawness and Arcade Fire’s sense of songwriting. This one’s a strange and wonderful album.  Give it some time…it blossoms.

From Jambase: excerpt from Dennis Cook’s Best of 2008 article

Rattling with the holy roll of Sacred Harp
singing, Appalachian pickin’ and other homespun yet deeply “other”
music, Fire On Fire play their squeezebox all night long in a dance for
moonshine wanderers and tall trees, who cry with them, “If we tear this
kingdom down/ let it be with a deserving and joyous sound.” Rough in
all the right ways, Fire On Fire infuse folk with a highly original new
logic that crawls up your spine in ways you won’t soon forget.

From their bio:

To me they sound like a backwoods, fierce,
psychedelic ¨Mamas And The Papas¨ or a crazed and vengeful gospel
string band. They´re great people and I love their music. It´s all
acoustic, but it´s not in the least folky. More old-timey incantations
– American music with excellent words and performed with the honed
violence of intent that truly great music requires. They’re a total
blast live. They just recently played my back porch actually and it was
one of the best live music experiences I´ve had in years¨.
