PHiSH – The Victor Disc jam sessions arrive in time for Hampton

With 11 days and counting to PHiSH’s return to the stage in Hampton, VA, there seems to be a disturbance in the Phorce.  A good disturbance, that is.   It seems that a tasty little JAM nugget has been leaked /released /liberated /offered from Phish headquarters!

If you are a fan of The Siket Disc or some of the late-night jams from Lemonwheel or the Control Tower Jam from The IT Festival, then by all means…proceed.  In my opinion, this is some damn fine, loose jamming that rarely strays into the uninteresting.

Take it away, Mr. Miner….

From phishthoughts.com:

“Poking around the Internet yesterday, I stumbled upon some new Phish music!  Posted in multiple Phish forums was the complete version of The Victor Disc, a series of instrumental outtakes from a 2002 jam session.  I had posted the first three tracks on Phish Thoughts recently, but now we have uncovered all ten tracks to the mysterious quasi-album!  The story behind the recording is as follows.

On December 19th, 2002, while Phish was in New York to appear on The Late Show With David Letterman,  Trey and Page popped into a downtown recording studio sometime after midnight.  Deciding to play, they called Fishman and Gordon, asking them to join.  Phish then taped an extensive spontaneous jam session, and decided on the title, The Victor Disc, named after the session’s engineer. ” cont…

Today’s Obsession: Geni.com

I just joined another networking site, but it’s not a Facebook/Twitter/last.fm type of thing. It’s a GENEOLOGY type of thing. I didn’t think I was gonna like it, but I’ve spent the afternoon building my family tree and I’m loving it.

The site is called Geni.com, and I’m addicted.

You add your relatives names and relationships, and that’s when things get interesting….then come email addresses, photos, locations, videos, and every other conceivable trinket or fact or nugget of information about everyone in your family. Since you’re adding some email addresses of family members (and giving permission to politely email the person), other family members get involved and create a virtual 3D image of your family tree, adding photos and info and missing pieces of the genetic puzzle. One thing I’ve realized is that my memory has gone to shit!

Glenn Beck is a tool, new video evidence proves

Al Gore reacts to Chris Anderson's question, &...Image via Wikipedia

So Glenn Beck (a tool), takes a cue from one of his subjects, erm, listeners, and likens Al Gore to Adolf Hitler, for training teens and preteens to act responsibly and independantly for the environment…. I don’t see the connection, tool.

The Sopranos….uncensored

As you can imagine, this is reasonably NSFW, unless you work at a truckstop.

Somebody took the liberty, the patience, and not to mention the time… to compile all of the curse words the Sopranos ever used in the popular HBO series, which spanned 86 episodes over 7 years. He took those clips and edited them into a 27-minute-long video. And, I think it’s chronological, so you can witness James Gandolfini getting fatter and fatter as the years progress.

Johnny Cash – The American Outtakes

American Recordings album coverImage via Wikipedia

Johnny Cash‘s legacy may have been set in stone by the Phoenix-Witherspoon biopic, Walk The Line, but the cartoonish representation of his early career does a good job of skewing the events of the legend’s life. In truth, Johnny became such a devout Christian that he abandoned many of the traits that made him a commercial success. He was dropped from his record label, and seemed intent on living out the rest of his life with his wife in Tennessee.

But his December years were spent under the umbrella of Rick Rubin‘s American Recordings label, and with Rick at the helm, Johnny recorded some of his finest material to date. From 1994 until his death in 2003, Johnny recorded a boatload of material, and, to date, his label has released American Recordings (1994), Unchained (1996), American III: Solitary Man (2000), American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002), Unearthed (2003), American V: A Hundred Highways (2006), and, reportedly American VI is due in 2009.

These outtakes are all similar in vein to the original American sessions, with Johnny Cash singing with just an acoustic guitar for accompaniment. This session was recorded from 5/17-20/1993 in Rick Rubin’s living room

Shannon Hoon’s mom shares rare acoustic tracks

As a generous gift to the Blind Melon community, Nel Hoon, mother of lead singer Shannon Hoon, has donated several tracks for our listening pleasure.

From the note included with the tracks:

About five years ago someone from California sent me about 20 CDs
with Blind Melon music. I had not listened to any of those until
recently. When I ran across this CD I felt that I had found a
treasure to be shared with all the people who love Shannon.
After thinking about it for days, I have concluded that Shannon
would have wanted me to give this as a Christmas present to you
and you and you and you and you … so Merry Christmas! nel hoon

To these ears, it appears that Shannon, playing here unaccompanied by his band, is recording a rough demo, ocassionally dictating a “Yeah that’s good enough” or “There’s like mandolins that are supposed to go at the end of this” and so on. There’s no recording date included with this material but I’m gonna assume (again) that these were demos from around the time that Blind Melon’s album Soup was recorded. Of course, sadly, Shannon Hoon would suffer from a fatal drug overdose on Oct 21st, 1995, at the age of 28.

As with all of the odds-and-ends Blind Melon music out there, this music is just so comforting to hear. For me, it’s all about remembering Shannon as the vibrant and promising singer that he was, and imagining what he could have been.

FROM SHANNON TO YOU AND YOU AND YOU AND YOU

01 – Flea Market Pete
02 – Cavities
03 – Walk
04 – St. Andrew’s Fall
05 – All That I Need
06 – Everyday (The Way You Looked Before)
07 – Letters From a Porcupine
08 – Weeping Like the Willow
