The Sopranos….uncensored

As you can imagine, this is reasonably NSFW, unless you work at a truckstop.

Somebody took the liberty, the patience, and not to mention the time… to compile all of the curse words the Sopranos ever used in the popular HBO series, which spanned 86 episodes over 7 years. He took those clips and edited them into a 27-minute-long video. And, I think it’s chronological, so you can witness James Gandolfini getting fatter and fatter as the years progress.

Johnny Cash – The American Outtakes

American Recordings album coverImage via Wikipedia

Johnny Cash‘s legacy may have been set in stone by the Phoenix-Witherspoon biopic, Walk The Line, but the cartoonish representation of his early career does a good job of skewing the events of the legend’s life. In truth, Johnny became such a devout Christian that he abandoned many of the traits that made him a commercial success. He was dropped from his record label, and seemed intent on living out the rest of his life with his wife in Tennessee.

But his December years were spent under the umbrella of Rick Rubin‘s American Recordings label, and with Rick at the helm, Johnny recorded some of his finest material to date. From 1994 until his death in 2003, Johnny recorded a boatload of material, and, to date, his label has released American Recordings (1994), Unchained (1996), American III: Solitary Man (2000), American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002), Unearthed (2003), American V: A Hundred Highways (2006), and, reportedly American VI is due in 2009.

These outtakes are all similar in vein to the original American sessions, with Johnny Cash singing with just an acoustic guitar for accompaniment. This session was recorded from 5/17-20/1993 in Rick Rubin’s living room

Blind Melon – The Good Foot Demos

I guess I’m on a streak today. You see, once Blind Melon gets into my bloodstream, there’s no stopping the posting. These tracks here are some of the better demo recordings that I’ve heard, ever. I’m imagining that these are the tapes that got them signed to Capitol Records…

Shannon Hoon’s mom shares rare acoustic tracks

As a generous gift to the Blind Melon community, Nel Hoon, mother of lead singer Shannon Hoon, has donated several tracks for our listening pleasure.

From the note included with the tracks:

About five years ago someone from California sent me about 20 CDs
with Blind Melon music. I had not listened to any of those until
recently. When I ran across this CD I felt that I had found a
treasure to be shared with all the people who love Shannon.
After thinking about it for days, I have concluded that Shannon
would have wanted me to give this as a Christmas present to you
and you and you and you and you … so Merry Christmas! nel hoon

To these ears, it appears that Shannon, playing here unaccompanied by his band, is recording a rough demo, ocassionally dictating a “Yeah that’s good enough” or “There’s like mandolins that are supposed to go at the end of this” and so on. There’s no recording date included with this material but I’m gonna assume (again) that these were demos from around the time that Blind Melon’s album Soup was recorded. Of course, sadly, Shannon Hoon would suffer from a fatal drug overdose on Oct 21st, 1995, at the age of 28.

As with all of the odds-and-ends Blind Melon music out there, this music is just so comforting to hear. For me, it’s all about remembering Shannon as the vibrant and promising singer that he was, and imagining what he could have been.

FROM SHANNON TO YOU AND YOU AND YOU AND YOU

01 – Flea Market Pete
02 – Cavities
03 – Walk
04 – St. Andrew’s Fall
05 – All That I Need
06 – Everyday (The Way You Looked Before)
07 – Letters From a Porcupine
08 – Weeping Like the Willow

Ryan Adams – Extra Cheese [Ghost Of Electricity Alternate Mix]

Today be a Ryan Adams day. To truly make it a Ryan Adams day, I am going to recreate, to the best of my ability, Ryan’s upcoming Extra Cheese EP (using key alternate takes and choice live tracks).

K here goes….

Extra Cheese – Ghost of Electricity Alternate Mix

1. Two – Live in Boston, MA 9/7/2008

2. Blossom – Live in Morgantown, WV 5/17/2007

3. Answering Bell – Live in Jamaica 08/2002

4. Evergreen – Live in Southampton, England 11/22/2008

5. My Love For You Is Real – from the Cowboy Technical Sessions

6. Desire – from the unreleased album 48 Hours

7. Hey There, Mrs. Lovely – Live at the Tressel Tavern, Seattle 9/9/2000

Zip file [17 mb]

No one’s really sure what the EP will truly bring, just yet, but my hopes are for some alternate takes, unheard sessions and key live tracks…sorta what I culled here. It’s not much, and the Lost Highway camp isn’t rolling out the red carpet or anything, but any little bit of new music would be truly welcomed…. and at $3.99, that might just be worth it.

later, TDTD

In defense of Shepard Fairey, the ‘HOPE’ artist.

OK, I’m not artistic genius or anything, but did anyone think that Shepard Fairey drew his now-iconic poster of Obama by memory or something?  Oh, no, wait, he sat Barack down and painted a portrait. Yeah. That must have been it….

Well, in another sign of the impending apocalypse, the Associated Press is now suing the collage artist for images that he may have used to model his Obama “Hope” poster.  Grow up AP.  Grow up.

AP accuses ‘Hope’ artist of copyright infringement

Project Playlist in effect: Public Enemy Edition…yeah, boyyyeeee

Project Playlist is in full gear!  I’ve been listening….and listening.  If you recall, I’ve pledged to listen to the 6,400 tracks on my iPod that have gone unlistened to in the last year and a half.  I’ve created a Smart Playlist in iTunes to keep a rotating list of music on my iPod that hasn’t been played yet. So that includes brand new music, and music that’s been sitting stagnant.

quote (from last week):

I’m gonna get started and I’m hoping to keep updating my tally every couple of weeks. Hopefully we’ll see progress! I’m feeling a small victory already.

5947
5946
5945 unlistened to tracks to go…..

WELL, I’m pleased to report some progress. I’m currently jammin’ out to :

some unlistened to Allman Brothers’ Eat A Peach (I skipped Mountain Jam…cuz it’s fuggin loooong)

a couple of Pixies Surfer Rosa and Live in Newport RI tracks

Porter Wagoner – Wagonmaster (2 tracks)

and some Public Enemy – Fear of a Black Planet (so good…)

Public Enemy – 03 911 Is A Joke.mp3

Public Enemy – 04 Incident at 666FM.mp3

Public Enemy – 05 Welcome To The Terrordome.mp3

So, for this week, my Project Playlist count rests at…..

5656…
5655….
5654

(5654 of 12142 = 46.6 %)

Ryan Adams and 48 Hours Revisited

In 2001, Ryan Adams made one of the best albums of his career, and never released it. It’s pretty safe to say that its one of my favorite albums that has never seen the light of day. A Youtube-er asked me if I could locate the album for him, and I gladly obliged… so there’s no sense in not sharing with everyone, right?

And the other reason for re-posting, Marty is on his way back to New England, right now, interviewing for a job and hoping to move back east. I’ll be seeing him tomorrow, sharing stories and comparing notes over a tallboy, and some good food at Angelo’s Civita Farnese.

Download the “48 Hours” album at : http://drop.io/v7vdmis

Samples:

Ryan Adams – 48 Hours – Walls
Ryan Adams – 48 Hours – Like The Twilight (Drunk and Fucked Up)

Excerpt:

You all know that Ryan Adams is slightly more than a hobby for me. Mangled B-sides and garbled concert clips are Mozart to these ears. One-off web clips are collectors items and treasured additions to my music collection. So when I got a hold of a number of Ryan Adams’ unreleased sessions a while back, (back when trading was done with bubble mailers and postage stamps…..none of this torrent malarkey), as you can imagine, I was amazed that the wealth of material that D.R. Adams had “tossed aside” was viable and desirable as good, quality music. 48 Hours, The Destroyer Sessions, The Suicide Handbook, The Heartbreaker Demos. My roommate, Marty and I would latch onto different albums, for the same reasons. Mainly, there were no reasons.

Marty had cemented this song for me, a few years back, on a road trip to New Haven. It was a few weeks after I had handed him a stack of new music. He popped in the newest latest greatest mix cd into the dashboard player. I think it was called “You Could’ve Looked Better”. This one song came on about 20 minutes down the highway. He said, “This is the best song ever written”.

We were going too fast and had too many things passing through our bloodstream. But being weary and being on the road, and working on what little sleep we could afford between drinking Narragansett tallboys after last call at the Decatur and a midmorning breakfast at the Classic Cafe. That day was ours, and this WAS the greatest, most perfect song ever written. It’s still pretty damn good. Glad I didn’t move to New Haven that fall. Wish I had those times back….
