Too Drunk To Dream

…ain’t no drinking when the bottle’s dry…

Zach Galifianakis, Will Oldham do Kanye West

I’ll never get sick of this. Ever. Even though it’s a couple of months past the blogger expiration date to post this, I’m gonna. If anyone cracks me up more than Will Oldham being ‘normal’, it’s Zach Galifianakis with a chainsaw. Na, Na, Na, Na. Wait till I get me money right….

Santogold and Diplo – Top Ranking [2008]

http://drop.io/lbxfige – pt 1.
http://drop.io/8eopl13 – pt 2.

Paste listed this disc at #24 on their year-end list and I can see why. They say it’s…..

A sizzling mixtape that re-imagines Santogold’s sound (which was pretty imaginative to begin with) Top Ranking boasts a strong Caribbean accent and a genre-jumping tracklist- the record drops young Santi White alongside Aretha, Devo, Desmond Dekker and Panda bear, and she hangs right in there.

I say “Damn, this is genius”. I CAN’T STOP LISTENING. HELP ME PLEASE. The way that Diplo creates a palette of Santogold mixed with a TON of great music surrounding her, is brilliant. Check her out on “Guns of Brooklyn”, doing an apt cover of the Clash classic. Or on Icarus, one of the greatest songs released this year. Or on the aforementioned Panda Bear mash, Lights Out.

Didn’t get a key job I was hoping for. “I shall proceed” as my friends The Roots say.

This track is from the COMPLETELY NEGLECTED(!) Homegrown album that released them from their contractual obligations to Geffen…

Def Jam CEO Shakir Stewart commits suicide

breaking news from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/11/03/defjam.suicide.ap/index.html

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) — The executive who succeeded Jay-Z as the head of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Atlanta, police said Sunday.

Shakir Stewart was named the head of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings in June.

Shakir Stewart was named the head of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings in June.

Executive vice president Shakir Stewart, 34, died on Saturday, his New York-based label said in a statement.

Stewart was found Saturday afternoon in the bathroom of his home in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, Cobb County police spokeswoman Cassie Reece said Sunday. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police described the shooting as self-inflicted and would not say who discovered Stewart.

The record label issued a statement Sunday on behalf of Stewart’s fiancee, Michelle Rivers, and his family.

“Over the past several weeks, Shakir’s behavior was inconsistent with the man we all know and love,” the statement said. “As much as we all tried to help him, Shakir was in deep pain and largely suffering in silence.”

Brown University announces Girl Talk, M.I.A., Lupe, Vampire Weekend

Looks like Brown University will have, once again, the preeminent spring weekend concert series. Oh, if only I were still in school…..um, and like, smart.

Confirmed (well, reported by Pitchfork, anyway) for Friday April 11 will be rapper and Kanye-protege Lupe Fiasco and fellow ivy-leaguers, and indie-band-of-the-moment Vampire Weekend. And for those managing to recover after the mayhem Friday, concertgoers will be treated to Sri-Lankan headline generator and hip hop urbanite M.I.A. , jam-tastic Umphrey’s McGee and cut-and-paste insta-party insaniac Greg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk on Saturday April 12th. I’d go just for him…

Jacko surfaces, makes his best album in a decade, thanks to RHYMEFEST

Chicago rapper Rhymefest teams up with producers Mark Ronson, Best Kept Secret, and a slew of guests on “Man in the Mirror”. Oh yeah, and a whole heaping pile of unauthorized Michael Jackson samples….

Excerpt from Greg Kot’s Chicago :

The Michael Jackson revival is in full swing. A 25th anniversary edition of “Thriller,” his biggest album, is scheduled for release next month, and Jermaine Jackson says there will be Jackson 5 reunion tour this year that includes his most famous brother. Bottom line is that Jackson is still an icon, despite a litany of tabloid indiscretions that would’ve crushed most careers and reputations.

But Jackson also hasn’t made much in the way of compelling new music in at least decade. And I doubt that any of the Michael-is-back projects will equal the artistic inventiveness (or the affordability) of the latest release from South Side rapper Rhymefest, who just released “Man in the Mirror (The Michael Jackson Dedication Album)” as a free download on his Web site, rhymefest.com.

The release is musical contraband; it flouts copyright law and freely dips into the Jackson back catalog for source material, including a trove of audio interviews. It rearranges this material into a fascinating virtual collaboration between two artists of different generations who have never met. Gimmicky as it sounds, sparks fly. Jackson hasn’t had such a provocative and inspired collaborator since he was working with producer Quincy Jones — back when “Thriller” reigned. [cont.]
