Blind Pilot…lack of pun needed for title of blog post

Ever since their earth-shattering performance at SXSW (see NPR link below), Blind Pilot have been basking in the glow of indie-stardom. They really deserve it. The Portland, Oregon duo were ‘green-fabulous’ (is that in the same vein as, say…ghetto-fabulous? but for hipsters?) on their previous tour for biking between venues up and down the Pacific Northwest.  Now, with updated van-esque transportation and a lineup that has swelled to nonet status, Blind Pilot have veered ON-course, selling out venues across the U.S. (I made it that far without a pun….sigh).

In other awesome news…Blind Pilot have been announced as the opening act for the Decemberists this summer.  Watch out, your hyper-literates……

Blind Melon – Good Foot Demos [1990]

Blind Melon – The Good Foot Demos

I guess I’m on a streak today. You see, once Blind Melon gets into my bloodstream, there’s no stopping the posting. These tracks here are some of the better demo recordings that I’ve heard, ever. I’m imagining that these are the tapes that got them signed to Capitol Records…

taken from the text file…

Blind Melon
Good Foot Workshop
Studio Demos
Los Angeles, CA

Cassette Master>DAT>>WAV>mp3

01 – Drive
02 – What You Lost
03 – Paper Scratcher
04 – Tones of Home
05 – Leave Me Alone (I Wonder)
06 – Dear Ol Dad
07 – Soul One
08 – Seed To A Tree

This Is The Real Deal Folks. No Slow Speeds, No Distorted Bass.
The Recording Itself Came From A Battered Cassette (Sony). There
Has Been No Digital Editing Or Eq’ing Done To This What So Ever. What
You Are Hearing Is What Was On The Tape…And It Sounds A Hell
Of Alot Better Than The Actual Silver Cd Bootleg.

Shannon Hoon’s mom shares rare acoustic tracks

As a generous gift to the Blind Melon community, Nel Hoon, mother of lead singer Shannon Hoon, has donated several tracks for our listening pleasure.

From the note included with the tracks:

About five years ago someone from California sent me about 20 CDs
with Blind Melon music. I had not listened to any of those until
recently. When I ran across this CD I felt that I had found a
treasure to be shared with all the people who love Shannon.
After thinking about it for days, I have concluded that Shannon
would have wanted me to give this as a Christmas present to you
and you and you and you and you … so Merry Christmas! nel hoon

To these ears, it appears that Shannon, playing here unaccompanied by his band, is recording a rough demo, ocassionally dictating a “Yeah that’s good enough” or “There’s like mandolins that are supposed to go at the end of this” and so on. There’s no recording date included with this material but I’m gonna assume (again) that these were demos from around the time that Blind Melon’s album Soup was recorded. Of course, sadly, Shannon Hoon would suffer from a fatal drug overdose on Oct 21st, 1995, at the age of 28.

As with all of the odds-and-ends Blind Melon music out there, this music is just so comforting to hear. For me, it’s all about remembering Shannon as the vibrant and promising singer that he was, and imagining what he could have been.

01 – Flea Market Pete
02 – Cavities
03 – Walk
04 – St. Andrew’s Fall
05 – All That I Need
06 – Everyday (The Way You Looked Before)
07 – Letters From a Porcupine
08 – Weeping Like the Willow

Ryan Adams – Extra Cheese [Ghost Of Electricity Alternate Mix]

Today be a Ryan Adams day. To truly make it a Ryan Adams day, I am going to recreate, to the best of my ability, Ryan’s upcoming Extra Cheese EP (using key alternate takes and choice live tracks).

K here goes….

Extra Cheese – Ghost of Electricity Alternate Mix

1. Two – Live in Boston, MA 9/7/2008

2. Blossom – Live in Morgantown, WV 5/17/2007

3. Answering Bell – Live in Jamaica 08/2002

4. Evergreen – Live in Southampton, England 11/22/2008

5. My Love For You Is Real – from the Cowboy Technical Sessions

6. Desire – from the unreleased album 48 Hours

7. Hey There, Mrs. Lovely – Live at the Tressel Tavern, Seattle 9/9/2000

Zip file [17 mb]

No one’s really sure what the EP will truly bring, just yet, but my hopes are for some alternate takes, unheard sessions and key live tracks…sorta what I culled here. It’s not much, and the Lost Highway camp isn’t rolling out the red carpet or anything, but any little bit of new music would be truly welcomed…. and at $3.99, that might just be worth it.

later, TDTD

Jaydiohead – Jay-Z x Radiohead – Minty Fresh Beats…um wow yeah!

Jaydiohead – Jay-Z x Radiohead – Minty Fresh Beats

So this is pretty much the best thing I’ve let my ears listen to in a real real long time. Fucking seriously. This SHOULDN’T be this good, right? Well, it’s really really good. Blows the Dangermouse mashup out the water. And it’s for free. On or here:

Last Call with Carson Daly…. Carson digs it. I’ll let him blather on about it, you know, instead of me. Carry on now, Carson…

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit hitting the high notes on new album

[Jason Isbell]
I really can’t say enough about the tracks that I’ve heard off of Jason Isbell’s new album Seven Mile Island, due Feb 17th. There IS something to be said about straight up honest songwriting, intelligent and inventive musicianship and a road-tested pace that would make any fan of Southern-tinged alt. country tap their foot and bob their head.

In fact, Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit have earned their road stripes. They’ve criss-crossed the States following the release of Sirens of the Ditch, having played over 200 shows in just over a year. Judging by the schedule of things to come, that count is gonna skyrocket. I know that I’m catching them in Boston. I’m not missing that.

Preordered ticket holders also get a one-year subscription to PASTE Magazine, which is pretty fucking cool. Not much comes for free anymore, so hook it up. If you order, and don’t want the subscription, hit me up in the comments (mine just ran out)

Deer Tick are a great Providence band

“Deer Tick are a great Providence band”

I don’t get to relish in those words too often. When I can, it needs to be announced. So even when Deer Tick play a sold-out Madison Square Garden some day, I’ll still be advertising the fact that they’re from the biggest little state in the union. With that being said…damn. Why haven’t I seen these guys around? Probably because the best music in Providence is not advertised. Most of the music, for better or for worse, is well under wraps. Hey, with the utter lack of performance space in this city, it’s a challenge to find a place to play. What ends up happening is, bands play in guerilla places, off-the-radar and technically illegal venues; houses, basements, in mills, artist studios, and lofts. When the shows ARE advertised (mostly on blogs), the writers are chastised for allowing the authorities the ability to obtain info on these performances. So, since I moved off of Federal Hill, and shifted my stomping grounds….sadly I don’t hear about a lot of these shows anymore.

SO, Deer Tick, er, John McCauley released an excellent album a short time ago called War Elephant, an alt-country gem heavily rooted in the indie sounds of Modest Mouse, Clap Your Hands, and The Cave Singers. Some really good shit. And coming out of Providence RI. The revolution has arisen again. 1st it was the Talking Heads, then it was Kristen Hersh, Kilgore, and Lightning Bolt. Now it’s The Low Anthem and Deer Tick. Watch out…cuz I’ve got an attitude and an acoustic guitar too…
