Too Drunk To Dream

…ain’t no drinking when the bottle’s dry…

This guy is a baseball MAGNET. Check this out!

Here is a completely random baseball story that is totally beyond my description and totally beyond my storytelling skills.  I’m not gonna be able to tell the complete story very well, but here’s a brief synopsis of what went down last week in NYC, for the closing games at Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium.

9/16/08 – A guy in the right field stands of Yankee Stadium catches a Giambi home run, does a crazy cabbage patch dance and gets on Sportscenter.

Well the next day, 9/18/08, Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon came to the plate and THIS happened:

one of the last home runs to be hit EVER in Yankee Stadium.  That’s right, it’s the same freakin guy.

2 HR balls in 2 days….

Well, apparently the guy isn’t much of a Yankees fan, actually.  He’s a Mets fan.  A Mets fan by the name of Zack Hample.  More on that in a sec.

Zack got his hands on a ticket to the last game at the Mets’ Shea Stadium for the final regular season game on 9/28.   Take a guess at what happened…..I’ll give you one second.

Done? Scroll

In the fourth inning, he caught a home run hit by Carlos Beltran….one of the final balls EVER to be caught at Shea Stadium.  AMAZING!!!!!

Well the media picked up on this story the other day, and you possibly saw him on the Today Show or heard him on the radio.  All of a sudden he’s been thrust into the spotlight, doing interview after interview….

But, who exactly is this guy???

He’s Zach Hample.  Zack Hample is a baseball fanatic who has snagged an astounding 3,816 baseballs from 44 DIFFERENT Major League ballparks.

And he’s also an author.  His book, Watching Baseball Smarter: A Professional Fan’s Guide For Beginners, Semi-Experts, and Deeply Serious Geeks is sitting on my bedside table as we speak.   HOW RANDOM???  I thumb through it almost every night.  His first book, How To Snag Major League Baseballs, was published in 1999.

You gotta check this guys blog out.  It’s incredible.  Seriously. No Seriously.
