Too Drunk To Dream

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Hometowns

I’ve fallen for this album in the last couple of days. I think it is the combination of influences that grabs me right away, and as the album unfolds, it becomes the melodies that form a lasting impression. I can’t help but compare Nils Edenloff’s vocals to that of Jeff Mangum’s. It’s that careless vocal style that offers up a careless impression of the Neutral Milk Hotel singer’s tone. The music is similarly careless. Not sloppy. But it weaves and spins, yelps and halts in a fashion similar to, say, The Avett Brothers, without as much of a country-punk ethos, but more of a focus on beat, melody and layering.
